Sustenance of monitoring, maintenance and operation of the Pointe Sables Environmental Protection Area (PSEPA) and the Pigeon Island National Landmark (PINL) impacted by COVID-19

Project Details
Name | Sustenance of monitoring, maintenance and operation of the Pointe Sables Environmental Protection Area (PSEPA) and the Pigeon Island National Landmark (PINL) impacted by COVID-19 |
Description | The SLNT’s technical proposal for this BIOPAMA RRGc1090, provided direct support for the management of two main protected areas under the organisation’s mandate; namely Pigeon Island National Landmark (PINL) and Pointe Sables Environmental Protected Area (PSEPA). Given that PSEPA is a wide area, the SLNT was unable to effectively monitor the entire area as frequently as required, due to limited resources. This grant would assist the SLNT by supporting the employment of additional human resources during the COVID-19 economic downturn and also providing technological resources, such as a drone, for monitoring biodiversity changes in a timely manner. The RRG also provided the financial resources required to resume the SLNT’s offshore island biosecurity monitoring programme which would deter, reduce or provide early detection of illegal or invasive activities that pose threats to the islands. Additionally, the proposal emphasised that PINL is the main income generation site managed by the SLNT. Revenue generated goes towards sustenance of not just PINL but several other protected and conserved sites maintained by the SLNT. Some of the funding under RRGc1090 was be utilised for improving site security and increasing the amount of revenue generated by PINL thereby offsetting some of PINL’s COVID-19 related operating costs. |
