Project Details
Name | Saving three of Brazil's most endangered species from the brink of extinction: the Alagoas Antwren, Marsh Antwren and the Blue-eyed Ground-dove |
Description | The proposed project aims to contribute to conservation actions of three of SAVE Brasil's projects focusing on three Critically Endangered bird species - Blue-eyed Ground-dove, Alagoas Antwren and Marsh Antwren, and their habitats. These are among the country's rarest species and little is known about them. The Blue-eyed Ground-dove and the Alagoas Antwren have small populations of less than 40 individuals, and there are no recent estimates of the Marsh Antwren's population. Although each project site is far from each other, all three species are in need for immediate conservation actions. Different approaches will be used, according to the conservation needs of each species. In the case of the Marsh Antwren the project aims to establish a public protected area to safeguard 3 populations of the species in Salesópolis in the Atlantic Forest. The idea is to replicate the model that SAVE created with local partners in the case of the Marsh Antwren Wildlife Refuge (2372 hectares), established in Guararema in 2019 - the frst ever to protect this species. In the case of the Alagoas Antwren, we will test interventions from the species' action plan that could help increase their population, such as supplementary feeding to boost reproductive rates and nest protection methods to increase chick recruitment in Murici. In the case of the Blue-eyed Ground-dove we will work with two approaches: 1. Work with smallholders who raise livestock around dove habitat to ensure the protection of prime areas by creating exclusion zones and providing technical assistance on how to integrate their activities with the conservation of the species' habitat; 2. Test nest protection methods to increase chick recruitment, decreasing losses by nest predation. |
