Strengthening of Coastal Zone Management Initiatives for the 3Bays Marine Managed Area, Haiti

Project Details

NameStrengthening of Coastal Zone Management Initiatives for the 3Bays Marine Managed Area, Haiti
DescriptionThe project targeted the 3Bays Marine Protected Area in northwestern Haiti including its eight primary coastal communities (Bord de Mer Limonade, Chabannon, Madras, Caracol, Jacquezyl, Phaeton, Ft. Liberté, and Derac). WDPA ID 555643716 The project’s main activities included: 1. Members of ANAP, FoProBiM, and local university students trained in environmental sciences, coastal and marine resources and biology, nonlethal (un-armed) environmental law enforcement engagement and laws relating to coastal and marine resources and MPAs, how to operate various types of equipment (boats, motors, snorkeling, communications equipment). 2. Local stakeholders trained in apiculture as an alternative livelihood The project has contributed to the following BIOPAMA Action Component objective(s): • Enhance the management and governance of priority protected areas by addressing existing limitations; • Support local communities’ initiatives aiming to enhance the livelihoods of local people whilst effectively contributing to protected areas management. The project has addressed the following BIOPAMA Priorities for Action: 1) Need to increase capacity (human and equipment) to monitor and manage resources within the MPA. 2) Need to provide environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative income generating opportunities for local stakeholders in order to enhance local management of the MPA.

Potential reduction of species extinction risk resulting from threat abatement actions

Absolute value (STAR)

4.9

0% of the total biodiversity conservation potential of Haiti is covered by this project.

10,052.4

1.8% of The Americas's biodiversity conservation potential is from Haiti.

543,527.6

44.4% of global biodiversity conservation potential is from The Americas.

This stacked bar chart represents the relative disaggregation of the selected contribution's total potential opportunity for reducing global species extinction risk through taking actions to abate different threats to species within its boundaries. The percentages refer to the amount of the total opportunity that could potentially be achieved through abating that particular threat.
