Batang Ai/Lanjak Entimau
Proportion of the area of the contribution comprising Key Biodiversity Areas: 25.5%
WCS is helping protect the largest Bornean orangutan habitat remaining in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, the Batang Ai Complex. The stronghold consists of contiguous protected areas, namely the Batang Ai National Park and the Lanjak-Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary, as well as their extension, proposed extension and non-protected areas. Batang Ai Complex is home to the Critically Endangered Bornean orangutan that is jeopardized in other parts of its range as they live in some of the world’s fastest developing areas and their forest homes are rapidly disappearing due to commercial agriculture. WCS works closely with government agencies and together have stabilized orangutan numbers, eliminated poaching, and significantly reduced habitat loss. WCS also partners with local communities to support enforcement efforts by being eyes and ears in high-risk areas. Our goal is to further increase protection at the sites and to identify remaining populations outside of protected areas within Sarawak.
Potential conservation benefits in saving biodiversity
Potential reduction of species extinction risk resulting from threat abatement actions
The chart below represents the relative disaggregation of the selected contribution's total potential opportunity for reducing global species extinction risk through taking actions to abate different threats to species within its boundaries. The percentages refer to the amount of the total opportunity that could potentially be achieved through abating that particular threat.
