Restoration of Mistra’s Saline Wetland
Proportion of the area of the contribution comprising Key Biodiversity Areas: 16.5%
The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) is responsible for managing Malta's protected areas under the EU's Habitats and Birds Directives. As per the management plan outlined for the Ix-Xagħra tal-Kortin Natura 2000 site, ERA initiated works in 2022 to restore the saline marshland to its former state and function. The project aims to control the presence of alien species, restore native vegetation through the reintroduction of indigenous plants, and expand the site's capability to retain water. To date, ERA has successfully introduced over 200 specimens of native flora to the site.
Potential conservation benefits in saving biodiversity
Potential reduction of species extinction risk resulting from threat abatement actions
The chart below represents the relative disaggregation of the selected contribution's total potential opportunity for reducing global species extinction risk through taking actions to abate different threats to species within its boundaries. The percentages refer to the amount of the total opportunity that could potentially be achieved through abating that particular threat.
