Description | Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral, rich in biodiversity, face growing environmental risks. Reliance on unsustainable energy drives deforestation, while climate change intensifies landslides, floods, and GLOFs, endangering livelihoods. This EU-funded project, led by AKF and other AKDN agencies with AKRSP as the implementing partner, aims to foster a climate-resilient, low-carbon economy in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral, benefiting over 350,000 people, including 171,500 women. The Energy Plus Project focuses on renewable energy transition, natural resource management, and sustainable development. It aims to reduce reliance on carbon-emitting fuels by generating 1.8 MW through three new micro-hydropower plants (MHPs) and rehabilitating four flood-damaged MHPs, benefiting 2,000 off-grid households. To empower women and youth, eight renewable energy-powered tech hubs will provide digital skills, entrepreneurship support, high-speed internet, and 24/7 electricity, benefiting 10,000 individuals. The project will improve natural resource management by developing community-led adaptation plans and converting barren land into 265 hectares of arable land via 48 irrigation systems, including renewable energy-powered water pumps, benefiting 2,000 households and training 140 community members. A Large Afforestation Programme will plant 2.6 million trees across 383 hectares, reducing deforestation and supporting Pakistan’s Ten Billion Tree Tsunami initiative. Additionally, the project will build public and civil society capacity in sustainable energy and resource management through training, community mobilisation, and technical support for government bodies, strengthening resilience and sustainable development. |
